Music Director Position
St. John’s Lutheran Church of Northfield, Minnesota seeks a full-time Director of Music Ministry. The position includes the following roles: leadership in the worship and music program of the congregation, organist, and director of the adult choir and other ensembles. This vibrant 2,000 member ELCA congregation has a long tradition of ministerial and musical excellence. The organ is a 1991 Dobson tracker organ.
The position requires an energetic and inspirational Director of Music Ministry, willing to lead a comprehensive music and worship program. The musical life at St. John’s is historically a rich one, encompassing a wide palette of musical styles spanning the life of the Church. The candidate must demonstrate excellence in playing the organ and directing an adult choir. Additionally, the applicant should possess a passion for music programs for children and youth, be a leader in recruiting, and be willing and able to accompany instrumental and vocal solos and ensembles. The candidate should be prepared to continue our tradition of musical distinction while incorporating the pursuit of musical diversity. The Director of Music Ministry works closely with the pastors and staff in collaborative worship planning. The position requires outstanding organizational abilities, leadership aptitude, and interpersonal skills that involve establishing excellent relationships with staff, vocal and instrumental musicians, and lay leadership within the congregation.
The Director of Music Ministry leads a five member part-time staff consisting of four youth/children’s choir directors and an adult hand bell choir director.
Minimal requirement is a bachelor’s degree in music or comparable professional experience. Salary commensurate with education, skills, and experience.
